Better Choices

Better Choices tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Becker, a couple who take great pride in maintaining their property as a showplace in the community until Mr. Becker encounters a whole series of setbacks in his yard care—everything from a malfunctioning lawn mower to destructive goats! Mr. Becker—and Mrs. Becker, too—feel truly aggravated but instead of behaving badly, they each exhibit the self-discipline to choose kind and appropriate behavior rather than letting their frustrations spill out as misconduct. Possessing self-discipline enhances considerably students’ chances of achieving success in their studies, in sports and special activities, and in maintaining good relationships with others. Additionally, a young person who has developed the habit of being in control of himself will be an asset in the workplace when he becomes an employee.
The book’s supplement section includes quotations on self-discipline and self-control as well as vocabulary found in the text, elaboration on connections to the real world, critical thinking questions, and writing/storytelling prompts.
